Remarks

Good evening ladies and gentlemen...
Thank you for coming to meet me.
I am very grateful and very pleased to see you all.

I bring you greetings from home where we are embarked upon a transformational process to rebuild the economy and return prosperity to our country. .

This is my first visit to Canada as Minister.

I could not let the opportunity pass without meeting you all.

This afternoon I metmy Canadian counterpart, the Hon Michael CoteauMinister of Tourism.

We agreed that, over the decades, the people of Canada and the people of Antigua and Barbuda have enjoyed a mutually rewarding relationship.
Indeed, there are many Antiguans and Barbudans living in Canadawho helped build the Canadian economy - - while supporting family members at home.

All of you in this room are part of that number.

We thank you and commend you for the loyalty you have shown to your native land even as you rightly contribute to your new homeland.

My friends, a fresh wind is blowing across our home country.

The vast majority of the people hasplaced confidence in the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party and our Prime Minister the Honourable Gaston Browne as he tackles the demanding task of charting  Antigua and Barbuda's road to recovery.

In turn, he is keen to reciprocate the people's confidence by putting in the hours of work, the intellectual rigour, and creative thinking that are required by a leader determined to deliver a better life for his people.

It is no exaggeration to say that Prime Minister Browne is the first person at work in the morning, and the last person to leave at night.

Even then, his work is his constant travelling companion and his duty to the people of Antigua and Barbuda his first obligation.

We thank God for his youthfulness, energy and drive, particularly because the situation we have inherited as the government is not good.

With each passing day we have discovered the severity of the country's fiscal shortfall; the extent of a huge debt burden from over-borrowing; and the loss of revenues through poor policies.

Indeed, we found a Treasury that was basically empty.

But, we do not intend to linger in the past; our resolve is to move forward; to fix the problems that beset our nation and to return it to viability.

One of the ways that we are doing this is by attracting new investment – both foreign and local.

More investment, means more jobs, more jobs means more spending in the economy, and the creation of even more jobs.

Putting the people back in to work, particularly our young people between the ages of 18 and 35 is a top priority.

Prime Minister Browne pledged to the people of Antigua and Barbuda that his administration when elected would bring tangible investments that will generate much needed economic growth.

He is determined to make our country an economic powerhouse in the Caribbean and we are committed to the pursuit of every single undertaking in our campaign manifesto, 'The People's Rescue Plan'.

Economic Development and foreign investment is a key part of my own portfolio and it has my full attention.

Already, we have embarked upon a number of initiatives to increase the number of hotel rooms; to establish new facilities; and to increase the marketing of our islands in many countries including Canada.

Hundreds of millions of dollars are being invested by the Government in enlarging capacity, ensuring a more modern infrastructure, and improving the visitor experience.

Several new hotels will be built, enlarging the number of available rooms and beds; and several existing properties will be refurbished and placed back into the stream of commerce.
The Royal Antiguan will be sold shortly, and an additional hotel constructed on the property. The Hodges Bay Club will also be resuscitated. The Half Moon Bay Hotel has attracted new interests with a great likelihood of it being resurrected.

The St. John's Harbour and the lands encasing the inland sea will be transformed. A boardwalk, shops, restaurants, and a hotel are to be constructed on the seafront making the area far more picturesque and economically vibrant.

At Nelson's Dockyard, my Government intends to create a New Economic Development Zone.

That newly-legislated Zone will encourage very low-density winter housing, not unlike the successful yacht and boat basin, witnessed by members of my Government, around the island of Sardinia, close to the Italian mainland.

We have signed a memorandum of understanding with China's Yida International Investment Antigua for a US$2 Billion resort development that includes the construction of five-star hotels, a golf course, 1,300 residential units, shopping facilities, a modern conference center and a casino.

We will also early in the new-year break ground for a 400 room “Beaches” Resort as part of our expansion with the Sandals Resorts International group.

This means more jobs and more opportunity for our people.

In the general election campaign, we undertook to provide  500 houses in 500 days.
What we did not know at the time was that the previous government had committed all government-owned lands to a single foreign operator in a deal that we are reviewing at the moment.

This reality has set back our plans for 500 homes in 500 days, but it has not stopped us.

Already we have raised $25 million to purchase such lands as are required to get the housing projects started until the deal signed by the previous government is fully examined and resolved.

It was our intention – and it remains our intention – that local contractors should be the principal beneficiaries of the contracts awarded for the construction of the 500 homes.

It is also our intention that the prices at which these houses are sold must be beneficial to our people, not to transient investors who will syphon off profits abroad.

This is not to suggest in any way that investors – foreign or local – are not entitled to profits.

They are, and my government will uphold their right to transfer profits legitimately made.

But where a significant part of any project is government resources, especially land, we expect the benefits to accrue first to the people of Antigua and Barbuda.

Tourism is our main engine of growth and as the Minister with the responsibility for the Tourism portfolio, I am charged with ensuring that tourism increases employment for our nationals, earns more foreign exchange, provides revenue for our government and raises the national income.

It is hard work but my team and I have hit the ground running.

I have already had discussions with airlines and cruise ships in the Florida area to increase the number of airplane landings and Crusie Ship calls.

While I am in Canada, I am also talking with Air Canada and WestJet in the context of both the number of calls in to Antigua and cost of doing so.

I am also pleased to tell you that we will be opening a brand new Airport terminal, which will be the largest in the Eastern Caribbean by March of 2015.

The Airport will be equipped with Jet Bridges and high-end duty free shops.

The terminal will greatly improve the visitor experience, with the potential for us to double the current capacity of visitors that pass through our international Airport.

My friends, Antigua and Barbuda has always been a second home to Canadians escaping the unbearable winters that often beset Canada.

We will continue to open our doors to all Canadians – including Antiguans and Barbudans who now live here.

And, we open the doors not only to tourists but to investors.

Among such investors is the Antigua and Barbuda community throughout Canada.

You have an advantage over other Canadians wishing to invest in Antigua and Barbuda because you will be investing at home.

For instance, I invite groups of you to form yourselves into a company that can purchase land and build retirement or holiday homes in Antigua and Barbuda.

Acting collectively, you can acquire land to build gated, residential communities with all the facilities you enjoy in Canada but with year-round sunshine, easy access to delightful beaches, and if you have a mind to – a good shot of Cavalier rum.
Should you wish to pursue that option, the government would be happy to facilitate it.

The only thing I am happy to tell you that we cannot guarantee is snow!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

We are determined to transform the economic and social lives of our people, and in fulfillment of that noble task we are well and truly launched.   Investment is the key component, and while tourism is our main industry, and the industry which now attracts our priority attention, it is not the only area of our focus.

We also want to take advantage of our natural resource – the Sun – to reduce our dependence on oil, and to develop renewable energy such as solar.

We must reduce the cost of oil and disel – even for our road transport vehicles that account for as much as 60% of our costly oil consumption.

We have been in office now for only two months, but despite the setbacks and crises that we found, we have marched on... determined to deliver; resolved to rebuild our economy and restore our nation's place of pride in the world.

In delivering the goods and services to which our people are rightfully entitled, we also want to restore the values of our traditional Antigua and Barbuda society, including respect for our elders; regard for our national symbols and institutions; discipline among our youth; community spirit and involvement; and pride in ourselves.

So even as we rebuild our economy, we know that we must also rebuild our society.

In this regard, education, social development and giving a helping hand to the less well-off are all part of the duty of care we have, as a government, to all our people.

My friends, I have been delighted to share with you some of the maps we have drawn and the roads that we have started to build toward the restoration of our country; its economy and its social fabric.

I feel a deep sense of privilege to be part of the rebuilding team, and I encourage you, as brothers and sisters, to join the team in any way that you think you can.

You would be most welcome.
Thank you

Government of Antigua and Barbuda

Remarks

Good morning and welcome…

First of all, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to all of you for meeting with us.

I know how busy you are so I greatly appreciate your participation.

We are also pleased to share that in Antigua and Barbudahas enjoyed a robust growth in Canadian visitor arrivals for each of the past three years of well over 20%.

I believe we have been a good market for you as we provide Canadians with an idyllic escape from the harsh winters you endure.

On that score, I register my great admiration of all Canadians.  You are indeed a strong people to experience freezing winters and still be such warm-hearted people.

I asked for this meeting to review and explore the possibility of a closer and more mutually profitable relationship between us.

Tourism is a key pillar of our economy and it has great potential for further expansion without ruining the environmental quality of our twin-islands.

Our exquisite beaches, as many of you know, are our premier attraction and, thankfully, with more than 365 of them, we can offer one for each day of the year.

There is also space for increasing and upgrading the number and quality of attractions on both islands in order to enhance the experience of visitors.  This includes developing our historic and cultural sites as well as establishing more restaurants and night time entertainment.

In this connection, although my government has been in office for only two months, we have embarked upon a number of initiatives to increase the number of hotel rooms; to establish new facilities; and to increase the marketing of our islands in many countries including Canada.

Hundreds of millions of dollars are being invested by my Government in enlarging capacity, ensuring a more modern infrastructure, and improving the visitor experience.

The St. John’s Harbour and the lands encasing the inland sea will be transformed. A boardwalk, shops, restaurants, and a hotel are to be constructed on the seafront making the area far more picturesque and economically vibrant.
At Nelson’s Dockyard, my Government intends to create a New Economic Development Zone.

That newly-legislated Zone will encourage very low-density winter housing, not unlike the successful yacht and boat basin, witnessed by members of my Government, around the island of Sardinia, close to the Italian mainland.

We have signed a memorandum of understanding with China’s Yida International Investment Antigua for a US$2 Billion resort development that includes the construction of five-star hotels, a golf course, 1,300 residential units, shopping facilities, a modern conference center and a casino.

We will also early in the new-year break ground for a 400 room “Beaches” Resort as part of our expansion with the Sandals Resorts International group.

Sandals already does considerable marketing in Canada and its sales and reservations machinery will immediately offer the new resort on Antigua as soon as it is opened.

These new facilities will create new business and new opportunities for everyone in the travel trade in Canada, since with more rooms on Antigua and more demand by Canadians who will be targets of increased marketing, passengers will turn to agencies such as yours to get to Antigua.

In anticipation of more rooms and more people desirous of coming into Antigua, we are pleased that our new Airport terminal, which will be the largest in the Eastern Caribbean, will be opened  by March of 2015.
The Airport will be equipped with Jet Bridges, Multiple VIP lounges, and high-end duty free shops.

The new terminal will greatly improve the visitor experience, with the potential for us to double the current capacity of visitors that pass through our international Airport.

It will offer airlines much improved facilities with the emphasis on efficiency and swift communication.

We are determined to continuously improve and upgrade the tourism infrastructure and facilities to make your service to your passengers better.

We are confident that with all the projects we now have in place, and more of them at the negotiating stage, the number of visitors to Antigua and Barbuda will increase steadily, including from Canada.

But, we realize that to ensure that Antigua and Barbuda remains competitive we need to grow the visitor arrivals from Canada over the next five years.

We know that a stronger presence in the marketplace is the foundation for increasing our Canadian visitor arrivals so you will be seeing more of us and also hearing more from us.

We want to begin a dialogue with all of you to work out how,we can be helpful to you in writing about Antigua and Barbuda.

I want to assure you of my readiness to see you at any time you consider it appropriate.

My door will be open.

I do appreciate your time and I welcome your thoughts and ideas.

You will find me an avid listener, keen to co-operated and not to dither and delay.
Thank you

Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party’s 500 HOUSES IN 500 DAYS RECEIVES FUNDING BOOST

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua and Barbuda – 25th August, 2014…… “The Antiguan Government of Antigua and Barbuda has created the bold target of building no less than 500 new homes in 500 days. It is projects like these that need the support of those who have enjoyed the islands hospitality,” according to long-term local resident Calvin Ayre who has again pledged to help the country he now calls home. Ayre will add US $2,000,000 to help make this brilliant project a reality.
Canadian-born Ayre commented: “I love Antigua as so many that visit year in, year out do as well and, therefore, think its only right to continue to give something back by way of saying ‘thank you’ to the wonderful people of this beautiful island.”
The project is designed to increase home ownership and will be aimed at public sector organizations in an attempt to help satisfy the housing shortage among their members.
The new ABLP administration wants to empower local builders with specific incentives to make it easier for them to develop housing projects.

Meeting with the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA)

HonourableAsot Michael
Minister of Tourism, Economic Development & Energy
Government of Antigua and Barbuda
Meeting with the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association, (FCCA)Opening Remarks

First of all, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to all of youand Michelle in particular fora wonderful dinner last evening and for meeting with us today. Antigua and Barbuda and the cruise industry have enjoyed a mutually rewarding relationship over the decades. The industry has seen considerable growth in its business with Antigua and Barbuda over the years, and we are delighted that we have been able to offer that opportunity. It has been mutually beneficial, and we want to enhance it both in the near and long terms. We welcome the decision of our key cruise partners to increase their calls for the upcoming season, and, of course, we will do all in our power to facilitate those calls. I want to give you some information on what my government is planning for the tourism sector as a whole, since this will impact the Cruise Ship business as well. First, I have already undertaken a number of visits to key tourism partners in the United States.   This is my second visit to the US since we came into office two months ago, and I will be leaving from here to visit other partners in Canada. We are determined to grow our tourism industry which still has room to do so while maintaining high environmental standards and a strong Caribbean image. Delegations led by Prime Minister Gaston Browne will be in China, next week; and in Mexico in October. The principal objective of these visits is to raise financing and attract investors in the tourism sector. We expect that, from Mexico, more than US$40 million dollars in bilateral cooperation will flow. From China, we expect to see a mix of grants and loans exceeding US$100 million dollars – part of which will be to expand our port.  This will be of immense benefit to the Cruise Ships now calling at Antigua. Specifically, we intend to improve the inner St. John's Harbour significantly. Dredging and sweeping of the channels and turning basins will commence before the 2015 tourism season, and will end before many of the megaships begin to set sail. We also plan to transform the St. John's Harbour and the lands encasing the inland sea. A boardwalk, shops, restaurants, and a hotel will be constructed on the seafront making the area far more picturesque and economically vibrant. This will be a boon to Cruise Ship passengers who venture on to our shores. The plan is to transform the Point area and turn a run-down neighbourhood into a vibrant economic zone. On the wider tourism scene, hundreds of millions of dollars will be invested in enlarging capacity, ensuring a more modern infrastructure, and improving the visitor experience. The Halcyon Cove, the Morris Bay property, Guiana Island and its environs, will also see significant injections of new capital as developers race to make the best of the energy and drive of the new administration. Falmouth Harbour will also be developed, preceded by consultations between Government and the environmentalists. You can see, therefore, that we have exciting plans ahead. But they are not just plans written on paper; they are backed up by contracts and by the financing required to bring them to fruition. We recognize that one of the big challenges we face as a cruise destination is to provide facilities to accommodate the new larger vessels that are being deployed. This is a top priority, and we are engaged now in trying to identify investors who might like to invest in a separate port at a different part of Antigua – either onecustom built for Cruise ships only, or one that becomes an exclusive container port, leaving the current Port, suitable expanded, Cruise Ships. We are prepared to examine beneficial incentives to an investor or group of investors willing to take advantage of this opportunity. Any idea that you may have on this score would be welcomed. We want you to assure you that we will be focusing strongly on the cruise industry. But while I have given you information on our plans and renewed our firm commitment to the Cruise Ship industry, the primary purpose of my visit here today is to listen and to learn from you. I welcome your ideas. Thank you.

Prashant Modi speaks about the Natural Gas

While various structure suppositions on the subject of "fracking" or coal mine methane, Prashant Modi elucidates that coalbed methane extraction is a more powerful, practical and more secure methodology to accumulate Natural gas.

According to Prashant Modi, the various misinterpretations including trademark gas have headed various customers and business dares to markdown the imperativeness holding all around. Nevertheless, various may be astonished to find that trademark gas is truly an extraordinarily commonsense, eco-obliging holding that could help improve economies and social requests over the globe.

Despite the way that GEECL and Prashant Modi have demonstrated the brisk progression happening in the vitality business and the standard gas market, he notes that there is still a considerable measure of myths influencing the advancement of this creative stock.

At Great Eastern Energy Corporation Limited (GEECL), Chief Operating Officer and President Prashant Modi endeavors to pass on new measures in India's vitality industry. Prashant Modi and his gathering continue augmenting operations in coalbed methane as a green alternative to fossil fills.

Prashant Modi urges the all inclusive community to take in all the more about normal gas and reality about this skilled holding.

Here are just several outlandish myths that have influenced many individuals a long way from this brain blowing fuel source:

Regular Gas is Not Eco-Friendly

The fundamental disarray that, all things considered, influences the advancement and progression of normal gas stakes and usage is that it is not a green choice to fossil forces. In any case, it is crucial to appreciate that trademark gas is truly much cleaner and more secure for the earth than outdated fossil fuel possessions, for instance, oil and coal.

An endless section of general gas is methane, which is not hurtful and is truly renewable. Without a doubt, experts are making more unmistakable methodologies to mass produce general gas from regular waste materials, including sewage and garbage.

For Prashant Modi, it is principal for individuals when all is said in done to better perceive how regular gas could be seen as a renewable possession. Describing this advantage a long way from fossil fortifies is principal to help popular sentiment get a handle on the benefits that trademark gas can give.

Characteristic Gas is a Dangerous Explosive

While trademark gas does hold the likelihood to touch off, various misconstrue this manufactured property to suggest that the benefit is a risky perilous that could begin demolition.

Trademark gas on its own is not a perilous. To be totally straightforward, for the resource for attempt and blast into flares the air must have a certain storing up of methane and the ignition source must be more than 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

Diverged from fossil forces and other essentialness holdings, trademark gas is truly less precarious and considerably more secure for open use. These qualities straightforwardness customer concerns, and additionally help more secure working conditions for those working at drill regions.

Characteristic Gas Will Run Out

Though various countries, for instance, the United States—have adequately exploited endless stores of trademark gas, some now acknowledge that this advantage is compelled.

Geologists, investigators and other imperativeness industry experts have headed enough research to show that there are bounteous stores of trademark gas underneath the world's surface. Prashant Modi clears up that these stores may show significantly all the more expansive with further examination.

Notwithstanding the way that the current stores of trademark gas were by one methods or an alternate confined, Modi references the renewability of the advantage as "biomethane."

With further research and establishment, it is exceptionally possible that the imperativeness business could evaluate how to reliably convey regular gas from waste materials, or biomass; an answer that would make trademark gas holdings ever-bounteous.

Regular Gas is Unreliable

Various customers now fathom that starting late, regular gas stores have stretched over the globe. Hence, Prashant Modi is focused on extending India's stores through GEECL coalbed methane extraction.

Disregarding the high holds of regular gas, various acknowledge that it is not a robust fuel and that it doesn't give the same number of livelihoods as people may think.

The truth is that general gas has various use and that its suitability continues increaing with more noticeable help, examination and research on the benefit.

According to Modi, it is fundamental to fathom that distinctive sorts of green, renewable imperativeness, for instance, sun fueled and wind power are customarily dependent on natural conditions. Interferences in these renewable establishments can make it hard to deliver strong imperativeness from normal holding.

These new facilities will create new business for Air Canada, since with more rooms on Antigua and more demand by Canadians who will be targets of increased marketing, passengers will turn to airlines like yours to get to Antigua.

In anticipation of more rooms and more people desirous of coming into Antigua by plane, we are pleased that our new Airport terminal is nearing its opening.
It will offer airlines and their passengers much improved facilities with the emphasis on efficiency and comfort.  We are determined to continuously improve and upgrade the tourism infrastructure and facilities to make your service to your passengers better. We are confident that with all the projects we now have in place, and more of them at the negotiating stage, the number of visitors to Antigua and Barbuda will increase steadily, including from Canada. I sought this meeting with you to give you some understanding of how we are expanding and improving the tourism product in Antigua and Barbuda. But, I also want tobegin a dialogue with Air Canada Vacationsto work out how, together, we can deepen and strengthen our relationship for our mutual benefit. I do appreciate your time and I welcome your thoughts and ideas. You will find me an avid listener, keen to implement plans and not to dither and delay. Thank you
